Common Washer Problems and How to Fix Them

Washing machines are workhorses that occasionally develop problems. Here's how to diagnose and fix the most common issues.

Washer Won't Start

1. Check that the lid/door is fully closed
2. Verify the outlet has power
3. Check the circuit breaker
4. Try a different outlet with another device
5. Look for a control lock feature that might be engaged

Washer Won't Drain

1. Check for kinked drain hose
2. Clean the drain pump filter (usually behind a small panel at the bottom front)
3. Ensure the drain hose isn't inserted too far into the standpipe
4. Check for clogs in the drain hose
5. Listen for the drain pump - silence may indicate motor failure

Excessive Vibration or Shaking

1. Ensure the washer is level (adjust feet)
2. Check for overloading
3. Redistribute the load evenly
4. Verify shipping bolts were removed (on new machines)
5. Inspect shock absorbers or suspension springs

Water Leaks

1. Check all hose connections
2. Inspect door seal/gasket for damage
3. Don't use too much detergent
4. Check the water inlet valve
5. Look for cracks in the tub

Clothes Come Out Still Dirty

1. Don't overload the machine
2. Use the correct amount and type of detergent
3. Clean the detergent dispenser
4. Run a cleaning cycle
5. Check water temperature settings

Musty Odor

1. Leave the door open between washes
2. Wipe the door seal after each use
3. Run a hot water cycle with baking soda or vinegar
4. Use HE detergent in HE machines
5. Clean the filter regularly

Spin Cycle Issues

1. Check for unbalanced loads
2. Inspect the lid switch (top loaders)
3. Look at the drive belt for wear
